What Princess Leia Taught Us About Strong Women

You've got to admit, Princess Leia was one of the first, if not best representations of a strong, realistic female character in film.

As the person who typically writes everything about Star Wars 'round these parts, today is a very sad day. A day in which we lost an icon in Carrie Fisher.

Just last night, a few of my friends and I were watching The Force Awakens, and I can't help noting the fact that maybe it was a subconscious nod to watch the film last night because of what had transpired over the weekend with her heart attack. We all were hoping she'd pull through it, but as you see Leia bid Rey a farewell, saying "May The Force Be With You," the weight of those words lay strong today, as Carrie passed on at the age of 60.

Her character, Princess Leia, (or in The Force Awakens, General Leia Organa) holds a sense of fire and fury, with a sensual and soft side hidden beneath the exterior. She proved to young girls that you could be beautiful, smart, strong, and extremely witty.

Here are some lessons that we feel we learned from the Princess during all of her years of service:

Never Sacrifice Being Yourself When It Comes To A Man:

Every woman in their lifetime has come across their Han Solo. Gorgeous, arrogant, witty, charming, and (most likely also) exceedingly annoying. She was never afraid of telling Han exactly what she thought, even in that meant getting a little lippy. She always stood up for herself when she felt Han was getting out of hand.

She knew how to cut when it count. But she did it with such grace, you couldn't help but feel it was deserved, especially when it came to quotes like this one.

Not All Women Are Damsels In Distress:

Leia never really fit in the "damsel in distress" role. She changed the stereotype and came to save Han Solo, which was a very powerful gesture, and showed just how resourceful she really was, just like other women do every day when being strong.

Strong Women Always Tell It Like It Is:

The thing about a strong woman: they don't particularly have a filter. Though a Princess by trade, Leia never held back. No coddling.

Always Be Your Own Hero:

Just because she had the title "princess" doesn't mean she was ever afraid of getting her hands dirty. She was able to protect herself and protect others using her skills and tenacity, and that will to survive.

It's Okay To Be Soft, Even If You're Strong:

The one thing that strong women tend to worry about is being caring or soft in the nature of being taken advantage of. Once Leia knew she loved Han, she was able to show a softer side, but still knew how to keep him in line.

She will forever rank as one of the best Princesses of all time, and probably the most unique.

Princess Leia Forever. May The Force Be With You, Carrie.

Sadly Carrie Fischer, actress best known as Star Wars' Princess Leia Organa, has died after suffering a heart attack. She was 60.
