Gucci Apologizes for Selling ‘Blackface’ Sweater
Gucci has issued an apology for selling an item criticized as racist. The “wool balaclava jumper” was being sold for $890 and was a black sweater that could be pulled up over your face. The sweater included bright red lips ringing an opening for the mouth, a detail widely denounced on social media as evoking blackface imagery. Gucci has been getting backlash and issued an apology which read:
“We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make,” the company said in the statement. “We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organization and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond.”
