Lauryn Hill Apologizes After Infuriating Glasgow Fans For Short Performance After Tardiness
Lauryn Hill recently upset some of her fans in Europe.
The “Doo Wop” singer left hundreds of fans outraged during Saturday night’s (August 3) Playground Festival at Glasgow, Scotland’s Rouken Glen Park, due to the singer showing up more than an hour late for her scheduled performance.
Hill was reportedly slated to hit the stage at 9:30 p.m. local time, but the singer didn’t show up until an hour plus later that was 30 minutes prior to the festival’s curfew, reports That Grape Juice.
As a result of Hill’s tardiness, her set had to be shortened from an hour to a half-hour. Nevertheless, Hill reportedly performed through boos and disappointment, following the singer informing her crowd that she was late due to a birthday celebration for her son, Zion David Marley.
Hill took to Facebook to issue an official apology to her Glasgow fans.
“My sincere apologies Glasgow for the late show and shorter set. I appreciate the energy and support I did receive from the great crowd, and the patience of the promoters,” Hill wrote.
“I hope to come back and make it up to the Glasgow audience. It is only with great respect and love for my art and the audience that I take the stage every performance. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in Europe. The crowds have been great and incredibly receptive.”
She also expressed that she’s excited about her other forthcoming performances.
“I look forward to my upcoming shows in Poland, Italy, Denmark, and the UK. Again, thank you, and my sincerest apologies for that shorter set,” she concluded.
For the past few years, Hill has repeatedly been criticized for her tardiness during performances and for not performing her music the way that it was originally released.
In 2016, writer Marcel Williams penned an op-ed titled “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Fan Loyalty” stating that “there’s no reason that Lauryn Hill should still be able to tour,” because of her lateness.
“If you’re still undecided on buying those Lauryn Hill tickets remember that I, and thousands of others like me over the past decade, did that so hopefully you wouldn’t have to go through that,” he wrote.
