Kowloon to expand its parking lot to outdoor car hop with drive-in theater

The death of the drive-in has been proclaimed far and wide. Back in the 1960s, more than 4,000 operated in the nation, according to the United Drive-In Theater Owners Association. Today there are around 500 throughout the nation. Drive-ins originally were built on the outskirts of town, where land was inexpensive. As cities grew so did property values, and many of the theaters were razed in favor of housing developments and malls. In the late ''70s and early ''80s, competition from indoor theater multiplexes and home videos helped reduce the number even further. We already know the food from Kowloon is amazing, but owner Andy Wong is looking at ways to get more creative in serving it during the pandemic. They’re looking to convert part of its expansive parking lot into an outdoor movie theater. Town approval of the idea would allow the popular establishment to offer carhop service.
“It’ll be like a drive-in movie theater where you can bring your family and enjoy Chinese food, drinks and watch a movie,” said Bob Wong, Kowloon’s owner. “It’s basically an idea of adding onto capacity by having outdoor activities. You have to think of different ways to maximize your revenue.”
People could bring lawn chairs, sit outside their cars and eat and watch movies.
Let’s hope the town of Saugus approves this quickly.
