New Strain of Flu Found in China Has Potential to Become Pandemic, Scientists Warn
PENKRIDGE, STAFFORDSHIRE - APRIL 15: Piglets rest in their sty at Lower Drayton Farm on April 15, 2020 in Penkridge, Staffordshire. Agricultural operations in the UK have been able to continue work amid the quarantine restrictions imposed to control the spread of COVID-19. Many segments of the agricultural industry are worried about the supply of farm labour given the extensive travel bans across Europe, although special charter flights have started to import foreign workers to the UK. Can we just get through 2020? After word that we haven’t even seen the worst of the coronavirus yet, comes word that yet another pandemic could be on the way. Scientists have identified a new strain of flu carried by pigs in China that they say has the potential to become a pandemic. It’s a new strain of “swine flu” that emerged in 2009. “G4 EA H1N1,” is the name of it and it has “all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus.” They are getting concerned about the rate of infection of said flu saying
“Controlling the prevailing G4 EA H1N1 viruses in pigs and close monitoring in human populations, especially the workers in swine industry, should be urgently implemented,” they wrote.
“Pigs are intermediate hosts for the generation of pandemic influenza virus. Thus, systematic surveillance of influenza viruses in pigs is a key measure for prewarning the emergence of the next pandemic influenza.”
