NEW ORLEANS, LA - JULY 01: Singer Monica performs onstage at the 2017 ESSENCE Festival Presented By Coca Cola at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on July 1, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

On Monday (Aug. 31), Brandy and Monica went head to head during their highly lauded Verzuz battle that garnered 1.2 million views. During the battle, Monica announced the release of her new single “Trenches” featuring fellow Atlanta native Lil Baby.

The Neptunes-produced track sees Monica singing about having a lover who is stuck in the streets. “For MANY years I’ve dreamed of working with The Neptune’s,” Monica said of the song on Instagram. “Admiring their ability to remain current yet timeless as well as their bond & brotherhood because loyalty is fleeting in this business !!”

“Love is what you make it, I’ll give you my heart if you promise that you won’t break it, I’ma keep it real with everyone, it ain’t no fakin’, I was trying to give it to you, you was trying to take it,” Monica sings on the track.

“Trenches,” is the follow up to Mo’s 2019 single “Me + You,” which was released after the singer dropped “Commitment.” Monica’s latest release was 2015’s Code Red, which featured guest appearances by Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott, Akon, and Timbaland, among others.
