Is Krispy Kreme returning to Boston?! The company announced on Tuesday their plan for expansion… and Boston was mentioned several times.
According to a securities filing, Krispy Kreme is looking to “effectively seize expansion opportunities both domestically and internationally.” In this filing, Boston was mentioned three separate times as a target for future expansion plans. The registration statement didn’t give away any further details, but Boston was mentioned specifically in a section where the company told potential investors “there remains significant opportunity for Hub & Spoke development, including a number of markets in which we are under-penetrated (New York, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia) and markets where we have no presence today (Boston, Minneapolis).”
The only current locations in New England are located at the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. In 2016, the company announced it would be returning to New England with the plan to open four stores in New Hampshire and three in Maine, but only two of those stores ever opened and they have both now been closed. Back in the early 2000’s, Krispy Kreme tried to compete with Dunkin’ in the Boston market with a Medford store in 2003 and seven more Boston-area stores after that, but they eventually all closed.
Fingers crossed that Krispy Kreme will make it’s way back to Boston in the near future!
