The star-studded Netflix comedy, ‘Don’t Look Up,’ filmed scenes all over Massachusetts for several months in 2021, but most of the films biggest scenes were filmed in Weymouth.

According to Patriot Ledger, any scenes with any sort of breadth or scope were shot in the South Shore city of Weymouth, specifically at the 33,000-square-foot former fighter-jet hangar at Union Point. Writer-director, Adam McKay, stated that while it was a little cold, the giant space was the perfect spot to get all the major shots done.

One of the scenes filmed at this location was the “Last Concert to Save the World,” where Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi sing “Just Look Up,” a sardonic love song written for the movie. The film crews re-created London’s Wembley Stadium in the large gray aircraft hangar at the old South Weymouth Naval Air Station (that they refer to as ‘The Hangout’).

“She sang it live, every single take. She, for real, has one of the great voices I’ve ever heard,” he said.

Many other scenes were also filmed in Weymouth, including a Space Shuttle launch, one of the opening scenes where you see astronomers gazing through a huge Subaru telescope that was built on a soundstage, and the first post-credits scene. The movie also filmed at several locations in Boston, including South Station, the Fairmont Copley Hotel and the Museum of Fine Arts. Other cities include Brockton, Canton, Chicopee, North Attleboro, Norton, Salisbury, Worcester, and along the Mass. Pike in Framingham.

‘Don’t Look Up’ is an apocalyptic comedy about two astronomers, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. No one takes them seriously, including the president, played by Meryl Streep. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Timothee Chalamet, Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill, Melanie Lynskey, Gina Gershon, Himesh Patel, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, and Boston actors Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.

The film is open in theatres now and streams on Netflix this Friday, December 24th.
