Kelis’ Husband Mike Mora Dead at 37 After Cancer Battle
Kelis’ husband, Mike Mora, has passed away after his battle with cancer. He was 37.
Mora’s death has been confirmed by the “Milkshake” singer’s manager Steve Satterthwaite of Red Light Management, per Entertainment Tonight, “Sadly, it’s true that Mike Mora has passed away. We would ask all to respect Kelis and her family’s privacy as of right now. Thank you.”
Last year, Mora revealed on his Instagram account that he was battling stomach cancer. He decided to share a part of his experience with his fans on the platform: “I am posting this…after so much thought. Many hours thinking of what the right thing to do is,” he wrote. “Not because of a selfish reason. not because I want people to feel bad or sorry for me and my family. I am posting this because life is full of the most unexpected situations. I never thought this could happen to me. At just 36, with 3 kiddos, and a wife that loves me. I want to be able to help those that might be experiencing something like this- a life-altering disease full of questions and doubt- maybe, hopefully. By showing that it’s possible to make it through.”
“You always see people post about how life is too short,” Mora wrote at the time. “How you should reach out to those you love no matter where life has taken you. It is the truth. Don’t take your time here, your time with friends, family, for granted. S— can be over just like that!… Love you @kelis.”
The late photographer was very transparent with his fans and shared what his experience was like going in and out of the hospital.
“This picture was taken as I was being transferred to the oncology section of UCLA Santa Monica from nearby Ronald Reagan hospital. This gentleman, Latin brotha, saw how weak I was. He looked back at me before leaving my room and said ‘I’ve seen people make it out of the craziest situations, be strong brotha, you got this’… They said 18 months. It’s been exactly 12,” he said in another post adding, “Here we go.. Scared as F¥#% … The story will continue..Love you @kelis”
Several friends of Mora and Kelis shared tributes to the late photographer, including Evan Ross.
In a since-deleted post per HotNewHipHop, Ross took to Instagram Monday to share a black-and-white portrait of Mora, writing, “We lost a brother Yesterday. We will truly miss you Mike. Thinking of some of the great times we all spent together.”
“I loved connecting again with you,” Ross added. “Hearing about your children and the life you and your wife have built. I’m sending all the prayers and love to your family brother. @kelis [black heart emojis] RIP @mikemorafotos.”
Kelis and Mora share two children together, a six-year-old and a one-year-old. Kelis also has a 12-year-old son she shares with rapper Nas.
