Bridgerton Season 2: No Duke, No Problem (Spoilers)
I wasn’t sure I was going to watch the second season on Bridgerton. I LOVED the first season, but after finding out that The Duke of Hastings (played by the very sexy Rege Jean Page), wasn’t returning, I wasn’t sure I would return either. I know, it sounds nuts, but he was one of the reasons I loved the show so much. That, and the fact that I’ve been so engrossed in my K-dramas, I was thinking I would get to it at some point. Well, I’m glad I got to it sooner than later.
Season 2 of Bridgerton revolves around Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, the eldest Bridgerton sibling, and his relationships with the Sharma sisters. Edwina is the Queen’s “diamond” of the season, and sister Kate is the secret object of the Viscount’s affection. That’s the dumbed-down version of the bright lights of season 2.
What I loved:
- Many of my favorite characters from Season 1 were back. Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury who command every scene they’re in. Eloise who’s looking to uncover Lady Whistledown, while fighting against participating in the “season.” Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown. Penelope who has an interesting storyline and character arc, but is just so infuriating by the end of the season. And Marina, who has a brief but impactful appearance. I really loved her character last season and was happy to get an update on her.
- The Sharma sisters. Let me just get this out of the way. These women are visually stunning and you can’t take your eyes off of them. I really loved how layered their characters were, and that we got to see their strengths and weaknesses played out over the season.
- Viscount Anthony Bridgerton. When I heard that he was going to be the focus of Season 2, I was not excited at all. We were coming off of a season of smoldering, sexy, Rege Jean Page. and just I didn’t see how we were going to get that same vibe from Anthony. Well surprise, surprise, he made a great leading man!
- The slow burn. Now this is where there is a lot of disagreement. Last season we got a lot of very steamy, clutch the pearls, sex scenes. This season, while we did get a couple nude flashes and sex scenes, it was more about the longing, slow burn of romance and desire. The glances from across the room, the brushes against each other, the panting, the sniffing of the neck which sounds a lot creepier than it comes off. Lol Maybe it’s all my Hallmark movie, K-drama slow-burn training, but I love it!
- Enemies to lovers. One of the tropes that is always interesting in stories. Kate can’t stand Anthony, and she frustrates him to no end. A recipe for love. Not sure how much I would like this in real life, but in books and on the screen, I love it!
- The women! I love seeing women come into their own, fighting for autonomy, and express themselves. So many great women in this show.
- The diversity. Love seeing so many people of color, which we saw last season, but it was stepped up a notch this season. Also loved the portrayal of Indian culture. HERE’S an article that talks about the South Asian representation in the show.
- The costumes. I would never want to wear something like this myself, but wow everyone looks so beautiful. Can you imagine having to dress like this every day?
- The music. Gotta love the classical covers. I love how every time I’m like, “that sounds like…” and it takes me a minute, but I eventually get it. Some of the covers this season: Material Girl by Madonna, Diamonds by Rihanna, You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette, and even Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus.
What I didn’t love:
- The ending. Honestly, I love a happy ending and we did get that, but it felt a little anti-climactic and I wanted more. I just hoped for a little more excitement that would make me say “I can’t wait for next season.”
- Penelope. While I do like her character, she was frustrating. I mean, get over Colin. Turns out he’s a d*ck. And what she does to Eloise, although I guess I understand why she does it, is just wrong. I was so mad at Penelope, but I guess that’s what it was supposed to do.
Overall, I was very happy that I watched Season 2, and I liked it as much, if not more at some points, than Season 1. If you’re on the fence about watching it, I don’t think you’ll regret watching. Would love to hear what you thought of Bridgerton Season 2. Leave a comment.
Now, back to my K-dramas!
