Earlier this month, Monica performed at the Country Music Television Awards alongside Jimmie Allen and Little Big Town; they collaborated on a rendition of “Pray.” It wasn’t a one-off for Monica; the R&B superstar is about to release her debut country album. However, one white reporter was seemingly triggered by the singer, and by Black talent in general having a presence at a country music awards show. Anthony Mackie – who he claimed not to recognize – was the show’s co-host, along with Kane Brown (a Black c0untry singer). Wait until he finds out that Mackie’s Sam Wilson is the new Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Patrick Howley is a pundit who has contributed to a lot of fringe right-wing websites. He writes for The National File, a website known for spreading disinformation on a number of topics, including COVID-19 treatments, the CDC, and vaccines: he reacted to the CMT awards by spewing racist comments about Mackie, saying, “I don’t know who this Black guy who’s hosting it. It’s supposed to be Country music. No offense. I mean, y’all have Hip-Hop and basketball. Just fly with your flock, bro.”
Howley continued, “No disrespect to the funky brothers of music. I love Earth, Wind & Fire, Run-D.M.C., etc. But country music’s different. Country music’s different, it’s not Wakanda.”
Moncia responded to Howley’s hate on Instagram: “I’ve never been more motivated.. Patrick Howley, although your feelings are likely shared by some, it’s NOT by the masses! I have an all star LEGENDARY team of true country artists that are currently working with me that would beg to differ!” she expressed.
“Because of the genuine hearts of [Leslie Fram] & @cmt … I shared the stage w/ @jimmieallen & @littlebigtown,” she said. Fram is an executive at CMT. “This was the first of many times that you will see me! I see You caught that my skin is melanated, but you missed that it was tough! I’m rooted in the word & built to last ! See you soon, or should I say ‘Welcome to Wakanda’ gracefully bows w/ @anthonymackie ‘OPEN ROADS COMING SOON’ MDA.” Open Roads is the title of the new album, which does not have a release date, but Vibe reports that it is being executive produced by country singer Brandi Carlile. Carlile duetted with Alicia Keys on the 2020 Grammy-nominated song “A Beautiful Noise.”
