Doja Cat Named Songwriter Of The Year Despite ‘Mediocre Pop’ Comment

Doja Cat callied her own music "mediocre pop," but she's in the minority with her opinion. On Tuesday (May 9), Doja Cat was named Songwriter Of The Year at the 2023 Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) Awards, honoring the Los Angeles native for her hit-making pen.

She was recognized for co-writing six of her biggest hits from 2022, including: "Get Into It (Yuh)" (co-written with SULLY and Y2K), "I Like You (A Happier Song)" (co-written with Jasper Harris), "Need to Know," "Vegas" (co-written with Rogét Chahayed and Yeti Beats), "Woman" (co-written with Aaron Horn (PRS), Linden Jay (PRS), Jidenna and Yeti Beats) and "You Right."

Making "mediocre pop" wasn't the only recent admission that Doja made recently about her music. She called her last two albums "cash grabs."

"Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash-grabs, and yall fell for it,” she wrote. "Now i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop."

Shortly after, she announced that her upcoming album is titled First of All and not Hellmouth. "It's not called hEllMoUth either it's called First of All," she wrote in another tweet. "And yes I’m announcing the album title right now."

Doja previewed some new music Tuesday following her denouncing of her "mediocre pop." Her newer music highlights her rapping ability.

"I know I’ve been the root of the cause/ I know I’ve had a temper before/ But still, y’all don’t quit/ I understand you want me to win/ I understand how hard that you’ve been/ I understand the cause and effect/ Now like dog eat dog and cat eat fish/ I understand the jungle we in," she spits over a soulful beat.

There is still no definite release date for First of All.
