People often think that the larger the city, the more chance there is of crime. That can be true, but there are plenty of very safe large cities throughout America. As it turns out, one Massachusetts city has been named one of the safest large cities in America.

MoneyGeek recently published a story ranking 263 cities with populations of more than 100,000 people from most to least safe. As for methodology, "The full data set including the city's population, cost of crime and crime rates by type of crime are included at the end of this study." They add that, "there's an ongoing stereotype that larger cities are more dangerous. Based on our analysis, we found that stereotype to be true: 9 out of the 15 most dangerous cities were large cities, while no larger cities (population of 300,000 or more) made the overall safest list."

Before we get to Massachusetts, let's look at general statistics. According to the study, the cost of crime per capita in U.S. cities was $1,836 in 2021. That's an increase of 6%, or $100 per capita, since 2020. Moreover, Naperville, Illinois, stayed at the No. 1 rank as the safest city overall ($156 per capita). St. Louis, Missouri, also remained the most dangerous city in America, with the highest per capita crime ($8,457). Finally, mass shootings accounted for 4% of the total cost of crime in 2021, but that's up a whopping 33% compared to 2020.

Safest large cities:

As for Massachusetts, Boston was ranked the No. 10 safest large city in America. The city's crime cost per capita is $1,119. For the safer cities, coming in at No. 2 was Virginia Beach, Virginia, and No. 1 was Honolulu, Hawaii. Um, yes, I would like to go to Hawaii not just because it's safe, but because, well, it's Hawaii. Find the full list of the safest and most dangerous cities in America here.

Massachusetts has some great spots to live, and as it turns out, one of those areas is one of the best neighborhoods to live in America.

This is according to a new study reported by Niche. According to the publication, "The Best Places to Live ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the overall livability of an area. This grade takes into account several key factors of a location, including the quality of local schools, crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics, and access to amenities in an attempt to measure the overall quality of an area." The two most important factors, according to the states on Niche.com's website, are the higher education rate and the cost of living grade."

Niche.com adds, "The same methodology is used to produce the Overall Niche Grade for each ranked place." They also got statistics mainly from the U.S. Census, and those stats "represent the most recent data available." What's nice about this study is that they used actual numbers and facts, instead of just going by reviews or a vibe.
