I just love an end-of-the-year list. And when it includes books, even better. If you're looking to see if one of your favorites was popular this year, you're in luck. Just released, the ten most popular books of 2023 at the Boston Public Library locations.

Rising popularity of the library

There's been a false narrative that no one goes to the library, and that those who do are all "old people." Wrong! According to a new report by the American Library Association (ALA), younger generations are definitely in the library. The report shows that 54% of Gen Z and Millenials have visited a physical public library within the past 12 months. Not only that, the library is drawing in even Gen Z and Millenials who don't self-identify as readers.

What's bringing people to the library?

According to Dr. Rachel Noorda, who is one of the people who authored the study, younger generations of people are reading books, buying books, and visiting libraries. She says that these Gen Z and Millenial visitors are not only engaging with books, but with other forms of media as well. They're gamers, readers, writers, and fans. They're people who are comfortable with the adaptability between different media categories and forms.

The list was compiled by the Boston Public Library's Collection Development team. These most popular books were picked across all formats and locations at the Boston Public Library in 2023.
