Target, Walmart And Costco Now Cracking Down On Store Self-Checkout In Massachusetts

Target has over 40 stores in Massachusetts. As reported in the Patch (Massachusetts), the popular discount department chain store has now placed a 10 item limit on customers at it’s “honor system self-checkout registers.” The new rule went into effect yesterday at mostly all of it’s 2,00 stores nationwide. Meanwhile, Walmart has also started limiting the number of items you can self-scan at the registers. They have over 10,000 across the country.
Limiting Items At Self-Checkout in Massachusetts Is Becoming A Trend
According to the article in the Patch, Costco is also making some adjustments to offset problems. They have 6 locations in Massachusetts, and “started making changes at self-checkout lines, cracking down on membership card checks to prevent membership-sharing.”
On Walmart’s website, you’ll find that if you want to self-scan you can enroll in their Scan & Go program. This exclusive program is for Walmart+ customers only, and the cost for their loyalty program is $98 a year.
I don’t know about you, but I find self-check out in Massachusetts can be more of a problem than a shortcut. I often have issues scanning and have to wait for a staff member to come over and enter their keycard to fix the problem. I will sometimes wait in a longer line to have an employee working the register at check-out.
