Sean Kingston agreed to return peacefully to his home state of Florida to face fraud charges.
A report from the Associated Press said that he was arrested on May 23 at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California’s Mojave Desert where he was performing. He waived his right to fight extradition in a California court and agreed to be turned over to authorities in Florida.
Kingston’s mother, 61-year-old Janice Turner, was arrested the same day as her son when a SWAT team raided his rented mansion in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
In recent news, Kingston has officially been booked in the Broward County jail. According to CBS News, Kingston and Turner have been charged with conducting an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, identity theft, and related crimes. The warrants allege they stole money, jewelry, a Cadillac Escalade, and furniture.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Kingston, whose real name is Kisean Anderson, had a bond hearing on June 3, where a judge laid out all of his criminal charges. These charges included one count of organized scheme to defraud over 50,000, four counts of criminal use of personal identification information, one count of grand theft greater than $20,000, two counts of grand theft greater than $100,000 and one count of fraud.
His attorney, Robert Rosenblatt told the Associated Press that they "are confident of a successful resolution."
His mother shared a photo on Instagram last week of her son, reflecting on his survival from a near-fatal jet-ski accident in 2011. During the accident, Kingston’s jet-ski crashed into a bridge, throwing him and his passenger into the water and leaving him unconscious. Kingston was hospitalized in critical condition. After 11 days, doctors discovered he had a torn aorta and required emergency open-heart surgery.
Turner wrote in her post caption, “Happy Anniversary to MY SON! Today marks 13 years since @SeanKingston Jet-Ski accident and a second chance at life. The accident was a stark reminder of how fragile life is…”
She continued, “As we move forward, I am more thankful than ever for each moment we have together. I LOVE YOU SON!!! Here’s to LIFE!!! #GODISGREAT One Team, One Dream.”
While several people supported her post, some people took to the comments to call out the two over their fraud charges. “A second chance at life to commit fraud and grand theft [red heart emojis, prayer hands emoji],” someone said. One person said, “How are you typing this from jail?”
