The oldest home on the market in America is in Massachusetts. Now, you may be wondering where Plympton is. If you are, you're not alone. Many people have never heard of Plympton. Before we get to the actual house, let's give you some facts about the small south shore town of Plympton, Massachusetts.

Where is Plympton?

Plympton, Massachusetts is located in Plymouth county and has a population of a measly 2930 people. It is bordered by Halifax, Kingston and Pembroke. It is a part of the  Silver Lake Regional School District and a fun fact: The United States Senator William Bradford was born there.

The Stephen Bryant house in Plympton is on the market for $800,000

The oldest house on the market in the country is a colonial-style, 2,503-square-foot home at 125 County Road. It has been maintained brilliantly over the past 31 years. According to the home's listing: “Step back in time to enjoy the workable fireplaces, new but period leaded glass windows, wide pine floors, antique and custom replica windows, exposed hand-hewn beams, vaulted custom kitchen, custom wainscotting, and more." You can actually see the listing on "Zillow Gone Wild." The home was built in 1669. It sits on 2 acres of land.

What would be the benefits of buying an older house as opposed to a newer one? Charm and personality would be two factors. Also, architecture, landscaping and established neighborhood. Also, cost would definitely be a factor here. Going for an older house would certainly be more cost effective.

I was thinking about homes the other day. Isn't it strange that even if we spend 50 years in one house, it's really not "ours." There might have been people before you and there will probably be people after you living there. But it still feels so intimately ours. I thought it was a deep thought anyway. lol

But it opens up this broader conversation: what cities in America have the most historical homes? And, more hyper-locally focused, which towns in Massachusetts have the most historical homes per capita? We do have the 2nd most historical homes in the country, ya know?

What is a "historical home' anyway?

In the United States, a home is typically considered a historical home, and eligible for historical designation or recognition, if it meets certain criteria related to its age, architectural significance, and historical importance.
