Boston’s New Queer Bar for Women Now Open
Dani’s Queer Bar — a lesbian bar that caters to Queer, Sapphic Women, Trans and Non-Binary members of Boston’s LGBTQ+ community — is now open.
The Boston Globe notes that Dani’s Queer Bar is the first lesbian bar to open in Boston in decades. Its founder, Thais Rocha, says on the bar’s website that “in the most lesbian fashion,” the bar is named after their dog, Dani, who is so stinkin’ cute.
The new femme bar is located in the Back Bay in the former space of The Pour House and has been in the works since January 2023. It was born from LGBTQ Night Life Events, which Rocha created, according to AXIOS Boston.
Rocha noted on Dani’s website, “Being lifelong Bostonians, we’ve witnessed our city evolve and grow and we felt it was important for our community to be part of that evolution. And thus, Dani’s was born, a lesbian bar in Boston, a space where Queer, Sapphic Women, Trans and Non-Binary members of the LGBTQ+ Boston Community can truly call their own.”
Dani’s Queer Bar boasts a full bar and a fun signature cocktail menu that includes the “Dance with Somebody” (Martini & Rossi Prosecco, orange liqueur, grenadine) and the “Booty Call” (Grey Goose, Cazadores cafe, espresso, simple syrup). As for the food menu, it includes standard bar fare like fries, mozzarella sticks, wings, chicken fingers and a classic burger. A lunch and brunch menu is coming soon.
Dani’s Queer Bar is located at 909 Boylston Street. Its grand opening hours are Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14 7 PM-1 AM. Its regular hours will be Monday-Sunday 5 PM-2 AM. Complete details can be found at DanisQueerBar.com.
The Current State of Lesbian Bars in the United States
While there are many gay bars in cities big, small and in between, there are a shocking amount of lesbian bars in the United States. According to The Lesbian Bar Project, there are only 33 lesbian bars currently in business in the country.
The Lesbian Bar Project was founded by Erica Rose and Elina Street, two New York-based filmmakers who wanted to raise awareness of the lesbian bars still in business in the US. They launched a fundraising campaign and raised over $267,000 to support the bars.
Rose and Street’s efforts led to the release of a documentary short film, which evolved into a docuseries for Roku in 2022 highlighting the lesbian bars in the US. In 2023, the docuseries won a GLADD Media Award and a New York Emmy Award. The Lesbian Bar Project will expand again in 2024 with the series exploring the FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-Binary, Trans and Agender) communities in Cologne and Berlin, Germany.
