New York Man Visits Massachusetts, Wins $1M Lottery Prize
A New York man visited Massachusetts recently and ended up winning $1 million from the Massachusetts State Lottery.
The Massachusetts State Lottery reports that Jose Carrasco of Corona, NY was in the state visiting a friend when he decided to pick up a “$100X Cash” instant ticket game. That $10 ticket ended up being a $1 million winner.
Carrasco, who’s a baker for a living, said he has no plans yet for his winnings. Since he opted for a one-time payment, Carrasco’s winnings will be $650,000 before taxes.
The Massachusetts State Lottery notes, “He purchased his winning ticket at American Food Markets, 1187 Blue Hill Ave. in Mattapan. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for its sale of this ticket.”
When it comes to the “$100X Cash” instant ticket game, all $1 million prizes have been won and claimed. The grand prize on the ticket is $4 million, and there are three $4 million grand prizes available. Two have been claimed, and as of publishing, one still remains.
While it seems like it should be unfair for there to be an out-of-state winner in a Massachusetts lottery game (especially someone from New York), nowhere on the state’s lottery website does it say prizes are only open to Massachusetts residents. In fact, on the “Claim a Prize” page, it simply states, in the case of Carrasco’s winning ticket, “Prizes over $103,000 must be claimed at Lottery Headquarters in Dorchester, MA. “
Other Big Lottery Winners in Massachusetts in 2024
So far, in 2024, there have been a number of seven-figure lottery winners in Massachusetts, but there have only been two winners who hit eight-figure jackpots.
In August, K & K Trust of Waltham claimed a $15 million prize won from the “15,000,000 Money Maker” instant ticket game. The winner opted to receive a one-time payment of $9,750,000 before taxes.
In September, WSB Family Trust of Wellesley claimed a $10 million prize won from the “10,000,000 Bonanza” instant ticket game. The winner opted to receive a one-time payment of $6.5 million before taxes.
Laws vary by state on whether lottery winners can remain anonymous when they collect large jackpots and other prizes. In Massachusetts, establishing a trust is an option to claim winnings while protecting your identity.
According to SKB Attorneys, “Massachusetts allows lottery winners to claim their winnings in the name of a trust. Because the trustee of a trust is the legal titleholder to property in the trust, for the benefit of the true winner, lottery winners can hire a trustee to claim the prize for them, thus keeping their identity a secret.”
