On Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, the Boston Athletic Association revealed a new medal design for the 129th Boston Marathon, scheduled for Monday, April 21, 2025.
This year's medal, which was shared via video on social media, features a full circular design, compared to the half-circle set atop a rectangular base characteristic of designs from previous years. In a notable change, the Bank of America logo is included in the medal's new design, as it was last year, but it is featured less prominently. For 2025, the logo is tucked underneath the race's unicorn, "Spike," that represents the marathon, but the company's name does not appear on the object.
According to a Boston.com report, last year, Boston Marathon participants criticized the 2024 finishers' medal design. That design displayed the bank's name and logo in color along the medal's bottom edge, below the unicorn. The 2024 Boston Marathon was Bank of America's first year as the marathon's sponsor.
The back of the 2025 medal includes a reference to the 2025 race taking place on the 250th anniversary of Patriots Day.
Additional elements of the new logo design include the following:
- Spike's jawline is enhanced, symbolizing the athletic and gritty nature of Boston.
- The new base of the unicorn represents the merging of the B.A.A.'s history and future.
- Within Spike's neck is a gap between two lines, reminiscent of breaking the champion's tape at the finish line.
- Thirteen points have been added to the mane, one for each decade of the B.A.A.'s legacy.
The North Attleborough firm Ashworth Awards manufactures the medals.
