The annual dog gathering at Boston Common won't be happening this year. Marathon Weekend restrictions prevented MA Golden Meetups from hosting their event. The Boston Athletic Association's special permit doesn't allow other activities during race days.
While people can still walk through most areas, they need to avoid roped-off sections. The city suggested other locations for running events that weekend.
The group had planned to honor Spencer at this gathering. He served as the marathon's official mascot in 2022. "Spencer knew exactly what he was doing, and he reveled in the difference he made," said Rich Powers to CBS News Boston.
The last meetup drew huge crowds. They donated 20% of their proceeds to fight canine cancer. This supported the Morris Animal Foundation's research on an aggressive blood vessel cancer.
After battling cancer, Spencer passed away last February. He spent his final months bringing smiles to kids and patients as a therapy dog.
Next year looks promising for new gatherings. The group maintains ties with Golden Strong, supporting ongoing cancer research.
Marathon weekend is packed with activities. Runners compete in 5Ks, mile runs, and relay races. At Copley Square's Fan Fest, people mingle with former champions while enjoying live music.
