The James Beard Foundation announced on Wednesday, Feb. 26, that South Boston's Sullivan's Castle Island snack shack has been named to its America's Classics Award list for 2025. This award places Sullivan's, often affectionately called "Sully's," in good company alongside several renowed establishments including Frank Pepe Pizzeria in New Haven, Peter Luger Steakhouse in New York, and Buffalo's Anchor Bar.

“This award is not only a recognition of our commitment to serving outstanding food but also a celebration of the traditions that have defined Sullivan's for generations," said owner Brendan Sullivan in a statement shared with NBC10 News Boston. “We are deeply honored to be recognized among America's Classics and to continue our legacy of bringing people together over great memories. This is not just an award for us: This is an award for all of New England.”

Founded in 1951 by Dan Sullivan as a hot dog stand, Sullivan's has evolved into a South Boston favorite seafood shack that serves delicious food. Popular menu items include double smash burgers, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries, lobster rolls, and more locally sourced seafood. The establishment is located along Pleasure Bay in South Boston.

“Every Bostonian has a story about Sully's — whether from working there after school as teenagers, having their sports team or fundraiser supported by Sully's, taking their children for some crinkle cuts like their grandparents took them, or simply enjoying it as a nostalgic seaside gathering place for locals," the James Beard Foundation commented within its profile of Sullivan's.

The James Beard America's Classics Award recognizes regional dining establishments known for their local character and the quality of their food.
