The MBTA is installing the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) on all Green Line trains to enhance safety and prevent incidents like derailments and collisions.
MBTA officials showcased the installation process at its Newton maintenance garage on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
The GLTPS system features sensors on the front, back, and top of each train that communicate with track anchors to monitor train proximity and prevent contact with other trains or objects.
An on-board display alerts operators if a train gets too close to another object, and if the operator does not respond, the system automatically applies the brakes to stop the train.
"This train will know where the train in front of it is, where the train behind of it is, and that train will know where this train is," said MBTA Chief Operating Officer Ryan Coholan in a statement shared with NBC10 Boston.
Full implementation of the system is expected by 2028, while phase one is set to be complete next spring.
"The first car that gets out on the system and equipped automatically increases the level of safety," Coholan added.
