A Papa Gino's pizzeria location in Hyde Park recently closed, leaving only one store in Boston proper, located in Dorchester at 748 Gallivan Blvd.
The blog Universal Hub first reported the closure of Papa Gino's at 1270 River St. A spokesperson for New England Authentic Eats LLC, the company that owns Papa Gino's and D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches, confirmed the closure on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
“After much consideration, we decided to close the restaurant as part of a broader effort to focus our resources on other areas of our business,” the spokesperson said in an email to Boston.com. “We're incredibly thankful to our employees, guests, and the local community for their support.”
Founded in 1961 by Michael Valerio, Papa Gino's once had more than 300 stores at its peak, including some beyond New England. According to Caught in Southie magazine, the chain has faced ongoing financial struggles since the 1990s, was sold to investors, and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2018.
Today, more than 100 locations of Papa Gino's and the dual-branded Papa Gino's/D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches locations exist across New England.
