Boston has once again proven that it knows how to throw a great party—without breaking the bank. According to a new study from WalletHub, the city ranks 17th nationally among the best places to celebrate New Year’s Eve in 2025. The personal-finance website compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 26 key metrics, including nightlife, affordability, safety, and weather forecasts for December 31.

The ranking puts Boston ahead of cities like Seattle and Denver, highlighting the city’s walkability, food scene, and festive traditions. In fact, Boston claimed the top spot for affordable fine dining and scored fifth for walkability—good news for those planning to ring in the new year on foot instead of behind the wheel.

One of Boston’s biggest draws is its variety of celebrations, led by First Night Boston, the city’s long-running New Year’s Eve festival that lights up Copley Square and Back Bay with art, ice sculptures, live music, and a fireworks display over Boston Harbor. For residents and visitors alike, it’s one of the most iconic—and family-friendly—ways to welcome the new year on the East Coast.

WalletHub’s data also gave Boston high marks for weather, noting it ranked first in forecasted precipitation (a dry night ahead, if the numbers hold). The city placed 33rd for neighborhood security, a mid-range score but one that reflects ongoing efforts to ensure safe celebrations downtown.

Experts cited in the WalletHub report suggest that travelers are paying closer attention to affordability this season, as inflation continues to squeeze holiday budgets. “Given the current state of the economy, travelers should avoid overpriced destinations and consider driving-based trips,” said Luana Nanu, Ph.D., of the University of South Florida. That advice might make Boston especially appealing to residents of New England and the Northeast who can visit without the cost of airfare.

Still, the holiday season doesn’t come cheap. Local restaurants often feature special prix fixe menus, and hotel rates rise sharply during the final week of December. Advance planning remains key, according to travel analyst Linchi Kwok, Ph.D., who recommends booking early or visiting less crowded cities to save money.

From the ice sculptures to the countdown in Copley Square, Boston’s blend of charm, accessibility, and celebration spirit continues to make it one of the top places in America to say goodbye to 2024 and hello to 2025.
