The MBTA has unveiled a new heritage locomotive that honors the New York, New Haven, & Hartford Railroad. It is the second in a series of three that will honor the legacy of predecessor operators of commuter rail service in the MBTA service area.
According to a report by Trains Pro, a rail industry news source, the locomotive is a rebuilt F40PH-3C unit. It is part of a 37‑unit group originally built between 1987 and 1991 that has been upgraded with remote monitoring, forward‑facing and in‑cab cameras, and modern braking and control systems. The engine carries the New Haven “McGinnis” color scheme of orange, black, and white. This locomotive began its first revenue run last week on Thursday, Feb. 5.
New Haven routes form the majority of the MBTA's Southside lines. According to Trains Pro, the MBTA bought the former New Haven infrastructure and rolling stock in 1973, including the Providence/Stoughton, Fairmount, Franklin, Needham, and Old Colony lines (Kingston, Greenbush, Fall River, and New Bedford).
In September 2025, a Boston & Maine locomotive entered service. A New York Central heritage unit is planned to enter service “in the coming weeks,” according to the MBTA.
