The MBTA has announced it is offering exclusive Boston Stadium Train tickets for World Cup games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, priced at $80 round-trip. These tickets will go on sale today, Wednesday, April 8, at 11 a.m. only on the mTicket app.
According to a CBS Boston WBZ-TV report, the T said the tickets will be good for travel on the entire Commuter Rail network on match days. Special event trains to Gillette Stadium for New England Patriots games, New England Revolution matches, and concerts generally cost $20 round-trip.
Ticket availability is expected to be limited. While tickets for the five Group Stage matches will go on sale on Wednesday, the round of 32 and quarterfinal matches will go on sale at a later date.
CBS Boston reported that a recent test of the transportation plan for a friendly match between France and Brazil on March 26 saw approximately 2,300 people use the special trains from Boston to Gillette Stadium.
The T anticipates transporting 20,000 fans on 14 Commuter Rail trains for each of the seven FIFA World Cup matches scheduled in June and July. Customers of all ages must possess a valid match ticket to ride.
According to an NBC 10 NEWS WJAR report, MBTA officials said the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue lines, along with some bus routes, will offer extended service on match days. Commuter rail lines will have some schedule adjustments posted in the coming weeks, officials said.
“MassDOT anticipates high volumes of traffic to Boston Stadium for the upcoming matches,” said Phil Eng, the MBTA's general manager and the state's interim transportation secretary, in a statement shared with The Boston Globe. “With our service plans and pricing announced today, we encourage the public to ‘Kick the Drive' and use the MBTA's Boston Stadium Train service instead.”
More details about the World Cup train tickets can be found on the MBTA website.
