One of the most fun things about getting a new dog is coming up with the perfect name. Unless your new fur baby is coming to you with a name already, there will be lots of discussion and debates about what you want them to answer to. If you need some inspiration, look no further than home. Let's talk Boston-themed dog names.

Importance of a dog's name

According to Rover.com, there is an art AND a science to picking the right name for your pet. For example, dogs are more likely to respond to certain sounds. They say that when it comes to naming your dog, a major concern is training. Your dog is going to hear their name over and over, and will be learning to respond to it when learning commands. That said, you should avoid choosing a name that sounds like a command. For example, don't use Flo which sounds like "no," or Kit that sounds like "sit." Another tip is to name your dog something that ends in a vowel. In addition to being the most popular dog names like Bella and Luna, they reportedly force you to change the tone of your voice. That's important because names ending in a vowel can be easier for your dog to understand.

More on sounds and dog names. It's said that you want to pick a name that starts with a sharp, distinct sound. A name that starts with a D, T, or K. Names that start with an S or F are softer and could be more confusing for dogs.

Boston-themed dog names

Let's face it, when it comes to naming dogs, a lot of people just pick names, or things, they like. For we locals, a Boston-themed name is a great way to express not only the love of our city, but our personality as well. And in Boston, we have lots of options. We could go with popular landmarks, sports stars, Boston slang, and more.

If you're looking for a name for your new puppy or dog, here are some great Boston-themed dog name ideas to try.

Fenway

Definitely a popular one! If I ever decided to get a dog, I would probably name them Fenway. I think it's a great name, and I actually have a friend who writes children's books and the dog's name is Fenway!

Ruggles

I think this would be a great name for a dog. The MBTA station on the Orange Line opened on May 4, 1987 as part of the line's realignment project. It was built to serve the Northeastern and Longwood Medical area, and replace the Dudley/Nubian station as a major bus terminal for the Orange Line.

Dunkin'

Nothing says Boston quite like Dunkin'. It's a staple here and we love our Dunkin' so why not name our beloved dog after it? If we know nothing else, we know that Boston runs on Dunkin'.

Ducky

One of the most iconic things to now do in Boston is to go on a Duck Tour. Not only is it a fun and popular way to learn more about they city, it's become synonymous with championships in the city. The duck boats are the way our sports champions get around the city after those big wins.

Chowdah

And yes, it must be pronounced with the accent. It's an iconic food here, and I could totally hear someone yelling "Chowdah" to get their dog's attention. Would it work anywhere else? I highly doubt it. But here, I think it would be hilarious.

Simco

Knows for it's delicious hot dogs, Simco's has been a Boston landmark since the 1930's. Located in the Mattapan neighborhood of the city, "Simco's on the Bridge" may be most famous for their hot dogs, but they also offer a whole lot of other food. Check out their menu to find burgers, pizza, chowder, subs, pasta, and more.

Brady

I'm sure there are quite a lot of dogs, as well as babies, named after our former quarterback. Tom Brady is one of the most beloved sports figures, so it just makes sense that people would want to name their best friend after their favorite player.

Franklin

For a lot of people, you think Boston, you think Franklin Park. The 527-acre parkland is located in the Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Dorchester neighborhoods of Boston. It's Boston's biggest park, and also the site of the Franklin Park Zoo. It was also designated a Boston Landmark back in 1980, which makes it a great name or your next dog.

Well-known in the Boston community is the Berklee College of Music, which would make a great puppy name. Many famous musicians came out of Berklee including: Quincy Jones, John Mayer, Laylah Hathaway, Charlie Puth, Chaka Khan, and more.

Tatum

There's so much love for Jayson Tatum in the city, that this just sounds like a no-brainer. Not only is he a great player on the court, he's proven that he's great off the court as well. His Jayson Tatum Foundation helps with camps, backpack supplies, scholarships and more.
