Congratulations residents of Massachusetts! You are the #1 state for wine drinkers in the country. I'm sure many of you will brag about this statistic to your friends as it seems wine is the most popular drink of choice for many. Many come home from a hard day's work to have a glass, or two, or three of wine daily. Many can't have a dinner with friends unless wine is involved. So this statistic comes to no surprise to us.

The website Toasttab.com has put together a list of the most popular alcohol by state. This list was gathered from the Q2 2023 Restaurant Trends Report which serves approximately 93,000 restaurant locations.  Looking at the results in general, beer is the most popular alcohol in the country. The most popular spirit? Vodka...although tequila tops vodka in some states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.  Bottom line is, people love to shoot tequila down south and have wine at the beach.

For the rest of this study, we will take a look at which alcohol is the most popular in which state. When it comes to beer, vodka,

hard seltzer, wine, whiskey and gin. While liquors like hard seltzer and hard ciders are considered seasonal (hard seltzer in the summer months, hard cider in the fall) it seems that their trends are staying more solid year round so according to Toast Tab, restaurants may want to consider keeping them in stock for the long haul. Regardless of this list, we always love to hear from you with whether or not you agree with the results. You can message us and maybe there's even a type of alcohol that wasn't rated on this list that was missed. Here are the most popular alcohols by state and what we love here in Massachusetts.

BEER #3 Pennsylvania

People in Pennsylvania love their beer. They drink it 39% more than the average American. And when you're looking at the type of beer, it's Yuengling.

BEER #2 Kansas

People in Pennsylvania love their beer. They drink it 41% more than the average American.  It's interesting too because Kansas has some strange liquor laws.

BEER #1 Minnesota

People in Minnesota love their beer. They drink it 53% more than the average American. Budweiser is the most popular beer.  And it looks like people from Minnesota are drinking less craft beer.

WINE - #3 Rhode Island

People in Rhode Island are drinking wine 59% more than the average American. There are some beautiful wineries in RI so that could be a contributing factor.

WINE - #2 Florida

People in Florida are drinking wine 71% more than the average American. It's the third largest state as far as wine's economic impact.

WINE #1 - Massachusetts

People in Massachusetts are drinking wine 72% more than the average American. There are even "wine food trucks" that go around the state.

HARD SELTZER - #3 Illinois

People in Illinois are drinking wine 92% more than the average American.  Why is hard seltzer becoming so popular? This may explain.

HARD SELTZER #2 Massachusetts

People in Massachusetts are drinking wine 109% more than the average American. However, in this study it says in general, drinking hard seltzer is on the decline.

HARD SELTZER - #1 Ohio

People in Ohio are drinking wine 161% more than the average American.  People in Ohio are drinking hard seltzer more than any other drink.

GIN # 3 Massachusetts

People in Massachusetts are drinking gin 59% more than the average American. So while we love our wine, we are still loving our gin.
