Day Trip: Rockport & Gloucester, Massachusetts

Don’t miss the chance to visit Rockport, a small seacoast town on the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts, or its neighboring town Gloucester.

With some of the best beaches and seafood around, and only about an hour form Boston, these summer hot spots are the perfect family day out.

• Rockport: Iconic Motif #1

  Probably the most famous location in Rockport, the iconic fishing shack on Bearskin’s Neck know as Motif #1.

  Seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this. Pulled out of the water, brought in the back and served fresh to you. Don’t mind the line, it’s worth the wait.

• Rockport: Bearskin Neck

  Home of the aforementioned Motif #1, Bearskin Neck is a section of town lined with rows of cozy and crooked little stores along the wharf. Stroll to the end and you’ll come to the end of the road, literally. Stop and take in the view!
• Rockport: Halibut Point State Park

  On a clear day, visitors to Halibut Point State Park will be able to see Mount Agamenticus, located 81 miles away in Maine, and the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. You can explore the parks trails and tide pools, picnic on the rocky ledges, and learn about the history of Cape Ann's granite industry.

  If you ask this writer, this is hands down the best beach in Massachusetts. Get there early, though, because the locals will beat you to it.
• Gloucester: The Fisherman’s Memorial

  This bronze statue was finished in 1925 to honor lost fisherman of Gloucester.

• Gloucester: Whale Watching

  A quick ride to the popular Stellwagen Bay, a national preserve about twelve miles off the coast of Gloucester, an excellent whale watching site.

• Gloucester: Eastern Point Lighthouse

  Sitting out on Cape Ann, the Eastern Point Light was built and rebuilt 3 times - in 1832, 1848, and the current version is 1890. It's 36 feet tall, and it's light can be seen for 20 nautical miles off shore.
