Jordan Chiles May Get Her Bronze Medal Back After All
Jordan Chiles May Get Her Bronze Medal Back After All. If you’ve been following the USA gymnastics drama unfolding over the weekend, you know that Jordan Chiles was stripped of her bronze medal. Let’s break down exactly what happened.
Jordan Chiles stripped of medal
Jordan was competing in the individual apparatus floor final at the Olympics. Initially, her routine scored her a 13.666 which put her in fifth place behind Maneca-Voinea and Ana Barbosu of Romania who was awarded the bronze medal. However, Chiles’ coaches submitted an inquiry with the judging panel, arguing that she should not have received a one-tenth deduction to her difficulty score for her split leap. The judges agreed and Chiles’ score was bumped up to a 13.766 which was enough for third place, awarding her the bronze medal.
Upon further review
Upon further review, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation later filed an appeal with CAS, claiming that the inquiry into Chiles’ score was submitted too late; precisely four seconds past the one minute that is allotted. They won that appeal, hence Jordan’s medal being stripped. However, USA gymnastics is now challenging that ruling saying they have time stamped video footage of them submitting the inquiry on time. According to a statement: “The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted.”
No word if and when a decision will be made to reinstate Chiles’ bronze medal.
