There are trends that come and go on social media. Some of this year's hottest tends have been: girl dinner, the red (and green) flags, and of course there are the many dance trends/challenges. Well there's another one that I just recently came across - masterdating. If you think it sounds like another word you may be intimately familiar with, you are right. The meaning of masterdating  actually has a lot to do with that other word. It's all about self-pleasure.

What exactly is masterdating?

Masterdating is a pretty recent relationship trend on social media. Like masterbating, it's all about loving and pleasuring yourself. It's about spending quality time alone. Practicing self-care. Enjoying your own company. Taking yourself out on dates. Going on adventures with yourself. Treating yourself to jewelry, or flowers, or anything else you love. And just taking the time to take care of yourself, and getting to really know yourself better.

Masterdating is a great practice to get into before you jump into a serious relationship with someone else. Knowing that you can take care of yourself, and how you want to be treated, can be incredibly beneficial when you do get into a new relationship.

Benefits of solo dating

According to an Glamour article, sex and relationship expert, Melissa Stone said, “Taking yourself on a solo date from time to time can have several benefits for your overall well-being and personal growth." They include: self-discovery, independence, empowerment, reduced stress, and freedom and flexibility. Stone also said that there are some potential downsides which could include feelings of loneliness,  and missing out on shared experiences. To combat that, she says, "I would suggest that alongside solo dates, it's important to make the effort to see and spend time with family and friends as striking a balance between solo time and social interactions is crucial to avoid potential drawbacks and ensure a well-rounded and fulfilling lifestyle.”

Need some ideas to kickstart your masterdating journey? Here are some recommendations.

Get crafty

It's always fun to learn a new hobby, and learning something crafty is always a fun new hobby. There are endless possibilities, but here's one you can check out that looks like a lot of fun. It's Tutuland, a tufting shop where you can make rugs or wall hanging.

Take a cooking class!

I took a pasta making class and it was a blast! Went by myself, met some great people and learned something new. Plus eating delicious pasta from scratch wasn't so bad either! I went to Dave's Fresh Pasta in Somerville.

Take yourself to dinner

Dining out alone is one date that some people feel very self-conscious about. But if you're at the right place, it can be a great experience. Here's Eater Boston's list of restaurants, great for solo dining.

Go behind-the-scenes of Fenway Park

Ever wonder what the inside of the Green Monster looks like? What goes on behind-the scenes when the Red Sox aren't playing? Try a Fenway Park tour. You'll learn things about your favorite team that you never knew.

Visit some of Boston's great museums

We are so lucky to have some incredible museums here in Boston. Of course we have the big ones: The Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art. But did you know that there are a lot more different, interesting, and even weird museums. Check out Museum Hack for a great list. Museums are a great place to go and experience by yourself. Get in touch with what you personally love and connect with.

Wander and discover Boston street art

There is so much incredible street art in and around Boston. The one above is done by the phenomenally talented Rob "Problak" Gibbs. You can see more of his work in other locations around the city. If you need some inspiration, check out where to find more great street art HERE.
