For the first time in 3 decades, America has a new favorite breed of dog. This year, it's the French Bulldog. For the past 31 years, Labrador Retrievers have held onto the #1 spot.

The American Kennel Club came up with the winner based on popularity rankings that cover 200 breeds. The AKC is the nation's oldest canine registry. The rankings are based on 716,500 puppies and dog registered last year. Those numbers showed about 1 in every 7 of them were French Bulldogs.

Why are French Bulldogs so loved? Patty Sosa, a spokesperson from the French Bull Dog Club says that "they're comical, friendly, loving little dogs, with modest grooming and exercise needs. They offer a lot in a small package."

FYI, the rankings don't include mixed-breed dogs like Labradoodles, Puggles, Mokies, etc.

So what were the rest of the Top 10 Favorite Dog Breeds?

After French bulldogs were:  Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles, bulldogs, Rottweilers, beagles, dachshunds and German shorthaired pointers.
