Stephen A. Smith Recalls Jay-Z’s Call After Rihanna & Beyoncé Debate
Stephen A. Smith went viral last year after comparing Beyoncé and Rihanna prior to the latter’s history-making performance at the Super Bowl. While the internet was up in arms by either slamming Smith for his comparison of the two artists or taking a side, the huge stir got him a phone call from Jay-Z.
If you recall, last year, Smith went on social media trying to pay Beyoncé a compliment but insulted Rihanna in the process.
“There’s one thing she’s not, she ain’t Beyonce. The only reason I brought up Beyoncé is because Beyoncé recently performed at the Super Bowl,” he said on the Sherri Shepard Show, referring to her appearance in 2016 alongside Super Bowl headliner Coldplay and guest Bruno Mars.
After receiving hate online, he apologized on social media. “Apologies to Rihanna for my words, gotta be more careful. I’m gonna own it. I know what y’all trying to do, but I’m gonna own it because I get paid to speak for a living, so I need to be more careful,” he said in the video. “I want Rihanna to know, you’re a superstar, you’re sensational, you’re spectacular, you’re no joke and you are a worthy person to be doing the Super Bowl Halftime Show.”

In the video, Smith added that he is a die-hard Beyoncé fan and that her solo appearance in 2013 and her 2016 appearance with Bruno Mars and Coldplay were the best Super Bowl Halftime performances he’s seen thus far.
Stephen A. Smith Recalls Phone Call With Jay-Z After Viral Moment
While he did apologize to Rihanna for his comments, Jay-Z, who is married to Beyoncé and helped Rihanna get her first record deal, did not take too kindly to Smith’s viral moment.
“A month later, Hov and I were on the phone,” Smith said Monday (March 4) on the Connect The Dots podcast. “Hov was like, ‘My dawg, you family, that’s family. That’s too close to say that.’ I said, ‘I didn’t know.’ He said, ‘I know.’ Done!” He concluded by adding that after the conversation, there was no bad blood between the two.
