Netflix Plans Season 2 for ‘The Perfect Couple,’ Storyline to Be Set in Nantucket
Fans of “The Perfect Couple” could see the series return for a second season with a new cast and storyline.
Variety has heard from several sources that Netflix is developing a second season of the popular series based on Erin Hildebrand’s novel “Swan Song.” Like “The Perfect Couple,” “Swan Song” will take place in Nantucket. Instead of focusing on the Winburys, “Swan Song” focuses on the Richardson family. Variety released an excerpt description for “Swan Song”:
“Chief of Police Ed Kapenash is about to retire. Blond Sharon is going through a divorce. But when a 22-million-dollar summer home is purchased by the mysterious Richardsons — how did they make their money, exactly?— Ed, Sharon, and everyone in the community are swept up in high drama. The Richardsons throw lavish parties, flirt with multiple locals, flaunt their wealth with not one but two yachts, and raise impossible hopes of everyone they meet. When their house burns to the ground and their most essential employee goes missing, the entire island is up in arms.”
As of March 17, no casting has been locked in for the series. The decision to develop more stories in “The Perfect Couple” vein follows the series’ popularity. The “Perfect Couple” enjoyed six weeks in the Netflix English-language Top 10 TV chart and topped Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming chart when the series launched.
According to Variety, Joanna Calo has been secured to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the new season. Dates for the new series run have not been announced. Calo has worked on several hit shows such as “Beef,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “The Baby-Sitters Club.” “Beef” is currently prepping its second season. Calo is also the co-showrunner on the FX/Hulu series “The Bear,” which is entering its fourth season.
In addition to Calo, season 1 star Nicole Kidman will serve as executive producer for Blossom Films along with Per Saari. Variety noted that Gail Berman, Shawn Levy, Susanne Bier, and Hend Baghdady are also executive producing the new season.
