Bald Eagle with Fractured Leg Rescued from I-495 in Merrimac
An injured bald eagle was rescued from the median of Interstate 495 north of Merrimac during the week of March 10 and is now undergoing treatment.
Shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14, several people alerted the Merrimac Police Department about the injured eagle on the interstate.
Merrimac Animal Control and state police responded to the scene. Animal Control Officer Brad DiCenzo successfully secured the eagle, which was initially taken to the Merrimac Police Department. Police officials then transferred the eagle to a wildlife rehabilitation center for evaluation and treatment.
Veterinarians diagnosed the eagle with a broken left femur, which requires surgery. That surgery is expected to take place during the week of March 17.
“I want to thank the public who reported the injured eagle and the experts at the wildlife rehabilitation center for their dedication to wildlife conservation. This is a great example of the community and professionals working together to protect our wildlife,” Merrimack Police Chief Eric Sears said in a statement shared with NBC10 Boston.
Merrimac police said they will share updates on the eagle’s recovery and release on their official Facebook page.
