Salem Ranks Among Nation’s Best ‘Heritage Haven’ Travel Destinations
With its distinctive blend of colonial and Gothic architecture, and its historical connection to the 1692 Witch Trials, Salem has claimed its spot on one of the U.S. Destinations with a “foreign feel,” according to a poll from the travel website Turn the Paige Travel.
In its survey of more than 3,000 travelers, Turn the Paige Travel asked individuals to learn which towns they would most like to visit with Salem at No. 8 in the country, the highest ranking of any city or town in Massachusetts.
Boston’s North End came in at No. 88, and New Bedford came in at 125 among the country’s top 140 “heritage havens.”
“Our survey highlights the most beloved towns across America that transport visitors to faraway places through their architecture, culture, and traditions,” said Turn the Paige Travel founder James Paige in a media statement shared with the Patch Salem. “These destinations prove that you don’t need a passport to embark on a global adventure.”
In additon to highlighting the Witch Trials in its write-up, Turn the Paige Travel also noted that the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and the House of the Seven Gables are must-see places to explore Salem’s English-inspired architecture and maritime history.
According to the site, “Walking through Salem’s historic district, with its Georgian and Federal-style homes, feels like stepping into a British colonial town, making it an ideal destination for history and architecture lovers.”
