Would You Watch Will Smith’s Next Movie?
I’m not sure if you are like me. Will Smith is not a person I want to give my attention to. Ever since he slapped Chris Rock, I haven’t watched The Fresh of Bel-Air, I Am Legend or Men in Black. I’m boycotting any Will Smith project until further notice. However, there is a new Will Smith film which will be on Apple Tv called Emancipation. The trailer looks really good (full disclosure, I’m into historic movies about slavery. I just graduated with a masters of history this year). I’m a little bias to these types of movies. Watch the trailer below.
If you watched it, doesn’t it look good. I can’t forget the image of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. That will cloud my judgement of this movie. The movie is about an enslaved man who embarks on a journey to find his family and it is inspired by a true story. Antione Faqua directed the movie and premieres in theaters December 2, streaming on Apple TV+ December 9.
Will Smith stated that this was “hardest movie I’ve ever made. Blood, Sweat & Tears… LITERALLY! Shoutout to Apple who doubled (and tripled) down on their commitment to deliver this epic story to the world. ”
According to Apple, the film was inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter.” One of the images – known as “The Scourged Back” – shows Peter’s bare back mutilated from whippings by his enslavers and it proved to be instrumental in shifting the public sentiment in opposition to slavery.
The film had an advanced screening in front of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference last weekend. NAACP President, Derrick Johnson was in attendance and praised the movie. “I had the pleasure of watching the film #Emancipation and can’t begin to tell how powerful this is for OUR community and OUR history. It’s a story of adversity, of resilience, of love, and of triumph.” This was according to CBS news.
