2025 Met Gala Theme And Star-Studded Co-Chairs Announced
The Met Gala is a major fundraising event that attracts some of the biggest stars from various industries. Every year, on the first Monday in May, celebrities gather in New York City to showcase outfits they’ve worked on with top designers and brands, often spending months in the process. Recently, the theme for the 2025 Met Gala has been revealed.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9, Vogue shared details about this star-studded event, which is held annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s gala will take place on Monday, May 5, and will honor the Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
According to Vogue, the exhibit is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. It will “feature garments, paintings, photographs, and more. All exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th century through present day.” Miller will be a guest curator for the show, along with Costume Institute Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton.
Miller explained that dandyism is about “dressing wisely and well.” She also called it “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even,” according to the outlet.
She added that the exhibit will “show how Black people went from being enslaved and treated like luxury items, collected like symbols of wealth and status, to becoming individuals who style themselves and set global trends.”
Met Gala 2025 Co-Chairs
The co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala have also been announced. They are Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour, and honorary chair LeBron James.
Business Insider shared that Anna Wintour has chosen celebrities to co-chair the event since 1995. Co-chairs help plan the theme, dinner, and performances, as well as promote the event.
The dress code for the 2025 Met Gala will be revealed early next year.
The theme of the 2024 Met Gala exhibition was “Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion,” while guests dressed to the theme “The Garden of Time,” inspired by a short story by J.G. Ballard. The 2024 co-chairs were Bunny, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Hemsworth, with a performance by Ariana Grande.
