Butterball Has A Turkey That You Can Cook Without Defrosting
Americans will be heading to the grocery store this Thanksgiving to buy a frozen turkey. That means we need to time the fine process out perfectly so Thanksgiving morning you will not have an icy turkey in the oven.
This is always an ongoing conversation in our house. Question is always when do we start the thawing process and how long should you thaw it out before it becomes too long.
For those who prefer a fresh turkey, this is not an issue, but you are probably going to pay a lot more for one. A couple of weeks ago I thought it would be great to go to a turkey farm in our area to buy a fresh one. When I saw that the price for a 16 pound turkey was close to $100, I decided frozen is just fine.
From freezer to oven?
Well, the folks at Butterball have done it. The question is how does this thing taste?
Butterball unveiled a new turkey for Thanksgiving that you don’t have to thaw out. You take it straight out of the freezer and just pop it in the oven. It’s called “Butterball Cook from Frozen“. (They really went literally with the name.)
It’s meant to avoid the common disaster where you realize you forgot to thaw your turkey out. It can take three days or more in the fridge.
They say it’s also great for people who don’t like touching raw meat. There’s no neck or giblets, and it comes pre-brined. So you don’t have to do anything except brush some oil on it. The directions literally say “Unwrap . . . Cook.”
The average cook time is five hours, so not much longer than a normal turkey.
They say it’s possible because of a “specially formulated brine.” And they claim it comes out just as “juicy, tender, and flavorful” as a normal turkey does.
The downside is it can’t be stuffed. You have to make the stuffing separately. But if you’re buying this turkey, let’s be honest . . . you’re making Stove Top anyway.
