Earth, Wind & Fire To Make History At Kennedy Center Honors
Earth, Wind & Fire, the group behind hits such as “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Let’s Groove,” “Shining Star,” and “Reasons,” will be honored in a major way, later this year.
The Grammy Award-winning group has become the first R&B group to receive recognition at the Kennedy Center Honors, Billboard reports.
“The Kennedy Center Honors celebrates icons who, through their artistry, have left an indelible stamp on our collective cultural consciousness,” stated Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein. “Earth, Wind & Fire’s hooks and grooves are the foundation of a seminal style that continues to shape our musical landscape.”
The prestigious award ceremony typically recognizes lead singers or paramount songwriters. However, Earth, Wind & Fire joins three other groups that have received the honor, The Eagles (2016), Led Zeppelin (2012), and The Who (2008).
Sally Field, known for Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Forrest Gump (1994), and Steel Magnolias (1989), among other movies and television shows, is another honoree for the forthcoming ceremony that also honors American singer Linda Ronstadt, and PBS’ Sesame Street. On Sunday, December 8, the 42nd annual Kennedy Center Honors will take place in Washington, D.C.
