Wedding season is upon us. So what are New England newlyweds choosing for their first dance songs these days?

Actually, is wedding season upon us? I don’t know, actually. When I got married a lifetime ago, we had a December wedding. I know that’s a bit of an unorthodox choice, but it worked for us. We had Christmas trees and garland and lots and lots of lights. And it snowed just days before the wedding ceremony, so we were blessed with a blanket of white as a backdrop for our photo ops outside of the wedding venue.

But I digress. I’m assuming that summertime is still widely accepted as “wedding season” in New England. It is, after all, a couple’s best shot at having an outdoor wedding ceremony and reception where the weather cooperates. Set your date in autumn and you’re rolling the dice. Ditto on an early spring wedding. So yeah, we’ll say that, as I type this in mid-August, we’re still in the middle of wedding season.

First Dance Songs: Here are New England’s Top Tunes

Of all the choices a couple has to make when planning nuptials (and there are hundreds, to be sure), choosing that first dance song is a pretty important one. It gives the newlyweds an opportunity to really make a lasting impression on the friends and family in attendance. Below, I’ve pulled the most popular first dance songs in each of our six states. And I’ve added a bit of commentary, too. No judgement, mind you. Just snark.

• Connecticut

  Frank Sinatra “The Way You Look Tonight” – No surprise to see ol’ Blue Eyes popping up on this list. It’s a timeless classic that has soundtracked weddings for generations.

• Maine

  Chris Stapleton “Starting Over” – So I’m guessing that Maine’s wedding market is dominated by second and third marriages if this is the top pick.

• Massachusetts

  Leon Bridges “Beyond” – I absolutely love Leon Bridges and I’m utterly shocked to see this as the Commonwealth’s top pick. I didn’t know so many people knew and loved him!

• New Hampshire

  Christina Perri “A Thousand Years” – I’d never heard or heard of this song before I came across it on this list. And I’m now seeing that it’s from the Twilight movies. This is hilarious.

• Rhode Island

  Harry Styles “Adore You” – Harry’s alright in my book. I like that he wears dresses from time to time because that type of behavior makes the worst type of people upset, which is funny to me. Dude writes absolute bangers, too.

• Vermont

  Jason Mraz “I Won’t Give Up” – Here’s the deal: if you choose this as the first dance song at your wedding, you’re not allowed to get divorced. Ever.
