The Days of Free Netflix Are OVER! The Password Sharing Crackdown Has Begun. If you are paying a monthly subscription fee to watch your favorite movies and series on Netflix and you’re sharing your password with others, prepare to pay. We’ve been hearing for several weeks now that Netflix was set to begin charging fees for sharing passwords. The charging roll out had already started earlier this year in four countries: New Zealand, Canada, Portugal and Spain. Apparently the roll out went smoothly. So smoothly that the company is now set to roll out its next phase into the United States. So what does this mean for you and everyone else who is currently sharing your Netflix password?

This basically means that you will not be able to share your password with anyone without paying a fee. How much that fee is, we’ll get into below. But just know this is all taking place starting this week.

  • Expect to see an email this week

Netflix began alerting members to the crackdown Tuesday. “Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with — your household,” read the email.

Netflix's password sharing crackdown is here - and it costs $7.99 per month

Netflix has revealed the details of how its crackdown on password sharing will affect viewers in the US and how much it will cost to keep extra people on your account. Netflix subscribers on its two cheapest plans (Basic or Standard with Ads, which cost $9.99 and $6.99 per month, respectively) don't have the option to add extra members to their account at all.

  • Who CAN you share your password with?

The only people who you can technically share your Netflix password with are people LIVING IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD. Anyone using your account outside of your household will cost you an extra fee.

U.S. users of Netflix are becoming subject to the streaming giant's efforts to restrict users from widely sharing passwords outside their households.

  • How much extra per month will this cost you?

To allow someone to continue sharing your plan outside of your household, you can pay an extra fee – $7.99 a month – per person.

    Extra Members

A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Learn more about sharing Netflix. Account owners can buy an extra member slot and invite people outside their household to use Netflix.

  • These extra people can be added to your plan ad free

You can add these people to your standard plan without ads for that $7.99 fee.

    Plans and Pricing

Netflix offers a variety of plans to meet your entertainment needs. As a Netflix member, you are charged monthly on the date you signed up. A Netflix account is for people who live together in a single household. Learn more about sharing Netflix.

  • What does Netflix cost in general?

There are several different tiers and pricing plans for Netflix:

Here’s how Netflix prices its tiers in the United States:

    • Standard ad-supported (2 devices at a time): $6.99/month
    • Basic (1 device at a time): $9.99/month
    • Standard (2 devices at a time): $15.49/month
    • Premium (4 devices at a time): $19.99/month
  • When will the password sharing crack down actually start?

Users began getting emails on Tuesday so look for the crack down to start in the coming days.

Netflix's password sharing crackdown officially hits US users

Netflix's ( NFLX) controversial password sharing crackdown just hit the US. On Tuesday, the company released a blog post with the news. "Netflix account is for use by one household," the company wrote in the post.

  • What technically is a Netflix household? (Who is this crack down going to affect?)

According to the Netflix website:  a household is a collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix.

    What is a Netflix Household?

A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Netflix. You can manage who uses your account by setting a Netflix Household.

  • How is this new change affecting Netflix as a whole?

After news of the announcement spread, Netflix stock rose before sinking 2%.  Investors believe the crackdown may turn off some users so only time will tell.
