Tracee Ellis Ross, Simone Biles, Kamala Harris Make Time’s Top 100 List
Time just announced its 100 most influential people list which profiles, Golden Globe-winning actress Tracee Ellis Ross, seven-time Olympian Simone Biles and the first Black and Asian woman Vice President Kamala Harris, for their individual impacts on the nation.
Tracee Ellis Ross’ tribute was written by the director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, Thelma Golden who says Ross embodies her middle name “Joy” throughout her whole being. Golden says she met Ross decades ago through a mutual friend says she has come to known Ross as an “amazing friend” and “walks through life informed by a sense of purpose while embodying passion, warmth, boundless creativity, and an incredible sense of humor.”
Simone Biles’ tribute was penned by the 23-Grand Slam champion Serena Williams who describes Biles as “enthusiastic” yet “stoic” and has an impeccable “balance between humility and confidence.” Williams also credits the 24-year-old gymnast as being wise beyond her years as she publicly championed for her mental health during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and continues to break down stereotypes for beauty as she sets new standards. Williams wrote that the gymnast embodies the endless potential of Black women.
Kamala Harris’ tribute was written by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi who defines Harris’ historic win as a “glorious step into the future.” Pelosi spoke on Harris’ upbringing with her late mother who raised Harris and her younger sister as she worked as a scientist to find the cure for breast cancer. Pelosi credits Harris’ mother as the root of the vice president’s determination. Pelosi ends her tribute to Harris by explaining the work she put in whether it’s “providing tangible relief to families, lifting up women in the workforce or defending the right to vote” Harris ultimately wants everyone to have the equal opportunity to determine their future.
