The GetUp Crew

It’s National Hot Dog Day! It’s a celebration of the humble (not a sandwich) summer staple. We’re actually in the middle of peak hot dog season. Peak season takes place from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs. That’s BILLION with a B. And everyone has their favorite hot dog topping!

Hot Dog Fun Facts

  • Hot Dogs were first sold at baseball games in 1893. Personally, I love a good Fenway Frank!
  • Mickey Mouse’s first on screen words were “Hot Dog!”
  • Frankfurt, Germany claims to be the originator of the hot dog and celebrated the hot dog’s 500th birthday in 1987
  • The world’s most expensive hot dog was sold by Tokyo Dog in Seattle. It was a whopping $169!
  • Hot dogs were one of the first food eaten on the moon. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. ate hot dogs on their 1969 journey.
  • Mustard is the most popular hot dog topping. Ketchup comes in a close second.
  • The New England Hot Dog also known as the Fenway Frank is boiled and grilled. And then it’s served in a toasted New England bun, topped with mustard and relish.

Hot Dog Toppings

Speaking of toppings, you do know that your favorite topping says a lot about your personality. Here’s the world’s best (un)scientific study of what your favorite hot dog topping says about you. My favorite is mustard and relish UNDER the hot dog in the bun.

One more thing…this is the best hot dog idea ever!

  • Plain

Plain hot dog, no condiments on a bun

You enjoy the simple things in life and don’t like being the center of attention. You’re not flashy and don’t like glitz and glamour. You’re more likely to stick to the classics in life.

  • Mustard

Two hot dogs in buns with just mustard, and a hot dog in a bun with mustard and relish

You are confident and know what you want in life. You do tend to be a little stubborn, but that’s only because you want what you want. If you add relish to your mustard, the sweetness mellows you out a little, and you’re more willing to compromise.

  • Ketchup

Hot dog in a bun with ketchup

Since this is the way most kids eat their hot dog, you’re definitely a child at heart. Or you just never grew up. Only you know which category you fall into. You’re generally a happy person who enjoys having fun and trying new things.

  • Onions

Hot dog in bun with mustard and chopped onions

You are definitely dramatic and love being the center of attention. You love adventure and are a risk-taker. You really hate being stuck in a rut.

  • Mayo

Hot dog in bun with mayo on it

You’re the type of person who never backs down. Whether it’s a fight or a challenge.  You’ll definitely argue with people in the comments.

  • Chili Cheese

Hot dog with chili and cheese

You are definitely the life of the party, and never back down from a challenge. You know that life is messy, but you embrace that messiness. You never let a setback hold you back for long.

  • Sauerkraut

Hot dog in bun with sauerkraut

You’re a risk-taker and are not interested in other people’s opinions of you. You love to travel, and exploring new places is your favorite way to vacation. You would even do great on a show like Naked and Afraid.
