Over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house we go…And the going is getting increasingly more crowded and more expensive. Thanksgiving is almost here and most of us will hit the road to somewhere, whether it’s within Massachusetts, New England or beyond.
According to AAA, travel for this holiday could reach prepandemic levels. Roughly 55 million Americans will hit the road for Thanksgiving, set to travel 50 miles or more. That’s a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volume. So, brace yourself, practice patience and be smart. Time to share the worst roads and times for Thanksgiving travel in Massachusetts.

The Hot Spots
Here are the trouble spots from AAA
- I-93 south, expected traffic to be 76% higher than a normal non-holiday weekday between exit 20 (I-90 junction) and exit 4 (Route 24 junction).
- I-93 north, the traffic volume is expected to be 53% higher between exit 17 (Government Center) and exit 25 (Route 28 junction).
- I-95 south, expected traffic up 30% higher between exit 36 (Route 9) and exit 21 (Coney Street).
- I-90 west, traffic volume is expected to be 26% higher between exit 131 (Brighton, Cambridge) to exit 95 (Route 122 Junction).
- Route 3 north, expect traffic to be 19% higher between exit 36 (Derby St.) and exit 20 (I-93).
