BOWRAL, AUSTRALIA - MAY 17: Apiarist Darryn McKay of Bowral Bees inspects hives on May 17, 2021 in Bowral, Australia. Darryn is a 'farm to gate' beekeeper with a number of hives hosted in the Southern Highland region, he also offers bee swarm collection and training workshops in the Spring. Australian bee populations were decimated by the Black Summer bushfires at the end of 2019 and early 2020 with around 2.5 billion bees and 10,000 commercial beehives destroyed in New South Wales and Victoria alone. Increased rainfall over the last year, along with concerted efforts by Australian apiarists has seen bee populations recover in 2021. Australia has an estimated 2,000 species of native bee, along with the European honey bee, which according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries plays an important role in large-scale agricultural pollination services and provide beeswax and honey to the domestic and export market. With bee populations under significant threat globally from extreme climate events, destruction of natural habitat, intensive farming practices, pests and disease, World Bee Day on 20 May aims to increase awareness and highlight the significance of bees and other pollinators to ensure food security, biodiversity and maintain a healthy ecosystem. A Massachusetts woman has been accused of hurling bees at police serving an eviction notice. Before we get to the nuts and bolts of the story, let’s talk about the potential injury that could come from someone being stung by a bee. First, in order to tell if you’re allergic, you must look for symptoms like hives, or swelling over a large part of your body. Then, if it is determined you are allergic, your doctor will prescribe you an epinephrine auto-injector such as EpiPen. This should be carried with you at all times. It seems as if some of the policemen in this story were allergic to bees which could’ve ended very badly. Now, let’s get to the who, what where and why of the story.

According to the police report, Ms. Woods asked the policemen if they were allergic to bees to which some replied “yes”. Ms. Woods responded  “Oh, you’re allergic? Good.” She began to agitate the hives and the bees began to swarm around them. At that point, several officers and bystanders were stung by the bees.

  • Ms. Woods put on a beekeeper suit to protect herself

“Never in all my years of leading the Hampden County Sheriff’s Civil Process Division have I seen something like this.  I’m just thankful no one died because bee allergies are serious. I hope that these out-of-county protesters will reconsider using such extreme measures in the future because they will be charged and prosecuted.

  • No word why Ms. Woods and the group of protesters were on the property or what her connection is to that property.
