Have you been checking your account everyday looking for some extra money? You’re not alone. Many of us have been checking our accounts ever since we learned that roughly 3 million taxpayers were expecting to get back around 14% of what they paid in personal income tax for 2021, thanks to an obscure law passed by voters in 1986. When will you get yours? Here’s the update from the Department of Revenue:

  • How much will you be getting and how to calculate your rebate?

    Expect to get roughly 14% of what you paid in income tax for the year 2021. Want to calculate exactly how much that will be? Use the state’s refund estimator HERE.

    Massachusetts law requires that when tax revenue collections in a given fiscal year exceed an annual tax revenue cap, the excess revenue is returned to taxpayers.

  • Who has already received their money?

    As of late last week, the Department of Revenue had sent out 1.3 million automatic refunds totaling over $1.2 billion from the budget surplus.

    Although some Massachusetts taxpayers have started to receive their tax returns, there's still plenty more green to distribute, according to a Department of Revenue spokesperson.

    The refund rollout is leaving some Massachusetts taxpayers wondering where their checks are.

    According to the numbers, the state is less than halfway through the list of people slated to get rebates. So that means you probably haven’t gotten yours yet, but keep looking! 

  • When should you expect to get your money?

    The state expects everyone will get their money by December 15. Just in time for the holidays.
