Michelle Wu Wins Historic Boston Mayoral Election
Michelle Wu is officially the first woman and first person of color to win a campaign for mayor in Boston.
“We are ready to meet this moment. We are ready to become a Boston for everyone. We’re ready to be a Boston that doesn’t push people out but welcomes all who call our city home,” Wu stated in her victory speech. She is expected to take office in about two weeks, according to WCVB-TV.
“I want to offer a great big congratulations to Michelle Wu. She is the first woman, the first person of color, first Asian to be elected Mayor of Boston,” City Councilor, Essaibi George, said, who conceded the Boston mayoral race on Tuesday night. “I want her to show the city how mothers get it done.” Of the two, Wu was the more progressive candidate with big ideas: rent control, free transit, a Boston Green New Deal, shifting responsibility for nonviolent 911 calls and traffic stops away from police to other workers, and much more.
