Kentucky Coal Miner Goes Viral At Son’s First Game
If you could use some good news, here you go. Michael McGuire and his wife Mollie had plans to take their son to his first University of Kentucky basketball game. A photo of them went viral after Michael came straight from his job to get there on time. Michael is a Kentucky coal miner and showed up with dirty clothes and coal dust on his face.
Molly on her husband Michael
This is the post she shared about her husband on Facebook. “This is my amazing husband Michael Joe Mcguire! He is an employee of Excel Mining (Alliance Coal) and works hard to provide for our family. It doesn’t matter to him how long he has worked or how hard his day is, he is always there and shows up for our babies! He is the most selfless man ever and always puts his family first! Our babies absolutely adore him and Easton our son tells people he is a coal miner like his daddy we are beyond blessed and thankful!”
The photographer
Sue Kineer is the woman that took the photo and said, “Everybody else had UK, Wildcat shirts on, and then we had this coal miner that still had coal dust on him. I knew that he had to have just run from work and come straight to the ball game.” The caption on the photo was, “I don’t know who this guy is but he has my vote for ‘father of the year.’” She said that she never expected the photo to get as much attention as it did, she was just trying to get it to Coach John Calipari. She was hoping that the little boy might get a signed schedule or something.
Coach responds
The picture did catch the eye of UK head coach John Calipari who said that his family’s American dream started in a Clarksburg, West Virginia coal mine, so the picture really hit home. Calipari has since offered the family VIP tickets to a game.

From what I’ve been told, after his shift, he raced to be with his son & watch our team. Don’t know who this is, but I have tickets for him & his family at Rupp to be treated as VIPs!! pic.twitter.com/a5BJXUnK2v
Coach Cal spoke from the heart about finding inspiration from Michael McGuire, the coal miner that brought his son to a @KentuckyMBB game 💙
